During the Covid-19 pandemic, many of Tanaami’s exhibitions and university lectures were cancelled, unexpectedly freeing him from over 60 years of a busy artistic routine. He began to feel, “As I spent my days idly, I was overcome by the feeling that I had to do something.” At that time, his eyes caught sight of a dusty canvas left on the floor of his studio. This canvas was a reproduction he had made of Picasso’s 1943 painting Mother and Child (Mère et enfant), in which he replaced the child with Astro Boy, exhibited at Osamu Tezuka’s “ATOM” exhibition. This chance encounter inspired Tanaami to start copying Picasso’s Mother and Child again. As he focused on painting, he found joy in the act of copying and felt a calming effect on his mind and body. He purchased many F6 canvases and began painting daily. Over nearly three years, he produced more than 400 reproductions of Picasso’s works, leading to the creation of his original Picasso series. Each day, he started by arranging several canvases: the first painted while directly referencing a Picasso book, and the following based on the previous one, gradually changing through memory and adjustment. This process, akin to sutra copying, became a creative practice through which he deeply learned Picasso’s thinking and techniques via imitation. This book compiles the vast collection of Picasso reproductions painted by Keiichi Tanaami through this creative process into a single volume.
