At PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO (Shibuya, Tokyo), the group exhibition commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Ultraman series, titled “SHUWATCH with U”, will be held from Friday, July 3 to Monday, August 3, 2026. In conjunction with this exhibition, Ryuichi Ohira has created a special limited-edition sofubi sculpture. The work reinterprets "Alien Baltan"—an icon deeply etched into Japan’s visual culture—through Ohira’s distinct artistic lens. The original mold was crafted through woodcarving. In transitioning to the sofubi medium, Ohira insisted on a "one-piece molding" technique, pursuing the inherent power of the object as a singular, unified mass. The edition is available in two nuanced colorways—magenta and cyan—that masterfully accentuate the shadows and depth of the sculpt. Limited to 100 pieces each,making it a highly collectible piece. It masterfully materializes the timeless allure of Baltan through Ohira’s unique sculptural sensibility. I believe that tracing a three-dimensional form through the act of sculpting is the most effective way to truly understand the original design.
