This book was published to commemorate Kiichi Tsutaya Solo Exhibition: From the Soda Collection, on view at NANZUKA. The publication features a selection of precious original paintings from One Hundred Metamorphoses of Little Girls, a series that Kiichi Tsutaya (1914–2005), who was active as a coloring book artist in postwar Japan, began producing prolifically around 1985 using nihonga paintings techniques. The works are drawn from the private collection of Daisuke Soda, who has spent many years assembling this remarkable body of work. Organized around the changing seasons, with seasonal words and the subtle signs of nature and landscape serving as guiding motifs, the book brings together Tsutaya’s vivid, joy-filled world and his distinctive depictions of little girls, which helped make him a defining figure in Japan’s KAWAII culture. The publication also includes a special contribution by Daisuke Soda titled Memories of Mr. Kiichi, as well as an essay by curator Takeshi Kudo titled Kiichi Tsutaya’s Nurie and Nikuhitsu-ga — Postwar Japanese Popular Culture and Visual Expression.
