A woodblock print work by Tanaami, produced by the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints, which carries on the traditional techniques of ukiyo-e woodblock printing, using carefully selected materials and the skilled craftsmanship of its artisans.
The work is printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi, a traditional Japanese paper known for its soft, full-bodied texture and elegant, refined quality.
Tanaami frequently references traditional Japanese imagery, including ukiyo-e, in his works. Among the most distinctive is the motif of the drum bridge, which appears repeatedly throughout his work.
The bridge is based on the arched bridge at Kameido Tenjin Shrine depicted in Katsushika Hokusai's ukiyo-e print Drum Bridge at Tenjin Shrine, Kameido from the series Famous Bridges in Various Provinces.
Hokusai's extremely steep bridge is seen by Tanaami as a symbol of ""a bridge you cannot cross,"" which he developed into his own distinctive imagery.
Furthermore, the bridge is imbued with the meaning of connecting the two worlds of life and death.
Through a single image drawn from ukiyo-e, Tanaami layers his own memories and imagery surrounding life and death, shaping his distinctive visual world.
