A woodblock print work by Tanaami, produced by the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints, which carries on the traditional techniques of ukiyo-e woodblock printing, using carefully selected materials and the skilled craftsmanship of its artisans. The work is also printed on Echizen kizuki hosho washi, a traditional Japanese paper known for its soft, full-bodied texture and elegant, refined quality. The "beam" of light that repeatedly appears in Tanaami's works is one of his characteristic motifs, rooted in his childhood experiences of war and his early familiarity with animation. The beams of light depicted in this work are likewise an important motif in Tanaami's art.
As a young child, he experienced air raids. At night, he saw searchlights of the Japanese military illuminating American B-29 bombers. The multiple streaks of light cutting through the night sky were deeply etched into his memory.
These experiences became the origin of the "beams" that repeatedly appear in his later works. At the same time, Tanaami had been familiar with animation since childhood. Even when drawing a still image, he imagined how each element within the picture would move in the next instant.
The sensation of condensing the flow of time across multiple frames of a manga into a single picture gives his works a distinctive sense of movement and floating sensation. The "light" etched into his memories of war and the sense of "movement" derived from animation overlap with one another, creating Tanaami's unique imagery, in which time and space seem to intersect.
