A collection of fantastic paintings and drawings by Keiichi Tanaami. This book features about 100 painting works from the 1960s and 1970s. It was published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name held at our gallery in October 2007. Included are critical essays: "The Exposing of Things We Must Not See: The Subconscious 'Pop' of Keiichi Tanaami" by Noi Sawaragi, and "Keiichi Tanaami's Daydream: General Theory" by Keita Fukazawa.
Perhaps the discomfort I feel when I observe Keiichi Tanaami's works comes from their refusal to comply with the formula for "Japanese-ness" and, on the contrary, bring pop art, the primary concept which is being banished to the subconscious, to the fore. Take his eroticism, for example: it is not the images that make Tanaami's paintings erotic; it is that tendency towards exposure—the exposing of things we must not see.
Special edition print, one included randomly out of four types.
